Herceg Novi Beaches, A Coastal Gem
Positioned between the northern Orjen mountain range and the entrance to the Boka Kotorska in the south, Herceg Novi is found on the northern shores of the Hercegnovski Bay. The geographical coordinates pinpoint the town at 42° 27′ north latitude and 18° 38′ east longitude. Its origins trace back to 1382, when it was founded by the Bosnian king Tvrtko the first. The town’s transformation into a significant economic, political, and cultural hub, rivaling its neighbor Dubrovnik, came under the leadership of Tvrtko’s successor and nephew, Stjepan Vukcic – Kosaca, known as Herceg Stjepan, from whom the town derived its name. Today, Herceg Novi stands as a sought-after holiday destination for Serbian tourists.
Discovering the Beaches
Some of Montenegro’s many beaches are also located in Herceg Novi Riviera. Five of these are major beaches worth mentioning here.
● Njivice Beach
Nestled 4 kilometers away from Herceg Novi lies Njivice Beach, a public oasis covering 21,600 square meters. Combining elements of rocks, sand, and concrete, this beach is often referred to as the “RIVIERA” beach due to its association with the nearby hotel. A well-equipped haven, Njivice Beach offers amenities like water, electricity, restrooms, showers, and catering services, ensuring a comfortable stay for beachgoers.
● Miriste Beach
Situated between the Zanjic valley and Miriste cape, the Miriste valley captures the essence of the Herceg Novi Riviera’s allure. This public beach, adjacent to Cape Arza, spans 2000 square meters and blends concrete and sand, forming a unique connection with the sea. Tiered structure of Miriste Beach creates an appealing harmony with the surrounding forest. In this idyllic setting, a restaurant offers Montenegrin specialties, providing a taste of local cuisine against the backdrop of the azure sea.
● Zanjic Beach
Zanjic Beach, located 6 kilometers from Herceg Novi within the Miriste valley, boasts a charm defined by its white pebbles. Encompassing an area of 5,550 square meters, this beach is ensconced by ancient olive groves and the sapphire waters of the sea. Offering both shade and refreshments, the olive groves create a tranquil space to relish Lustica’s flavors and unwind. Nearby attractions include the Blue Cave and the Isle of Mamula, adorned with an Austrian fortress. During the summer season, regular boat services connect Herceg Novi to Zanjic, ensuring easy access for visitors.
● Kumbor-Kamenari Beaches
This stretch of the Herceg Novi Riviera is graced by a multitude of smaller beaches, dotted with docks and quays backed by citrus and olive groves, as well as other Mediterranean flora. These shores span approximately 3,100 meters and have the capacity to accommodate around 6,000 beachgoers.
● Rose Beach
Perched at the tip of the Lustica peninsula, Rose Beach is a captivating sight with its unique architectural settlement hugging the hillside against the sea. The backdrop of lush Mediterranean plants and a surrounding forest accentuate its charm. A rocky shoreline and deep sea with a mix of sandy and rocky seabed make it a magnet for divers and underwater fishing enthusiasts. A remnant of history, Rose once served as a quarantine site for sailors worldwide. Today, descendants of Portuguese and Spanish mariners can be encountered here. Accessible by both land and sea, Rose remains one of the Riviera’s most enchanting destinations.
The Herceg Novi Riviera stands as a coastal paradise adorned with an array of beaches that promise unforgettable experiences. From the shores of Njivice to the rocky allure of Rose, each beach encapsulates the essence of this idyllic coastal haven.
